Northwestern Financial Review, Oct 15-Oct 31, 2004

A subcommittee of the House Agriculture Committee hosted a hearing Sept. 29 to review the Farm Credit System and its provisions for organixations to exit the system, as Farm Credit Services of America may do in light of its proposed acquisition by Rabobank. Speaking for the ABA, Roger Monson of Citizens State Bank of Finley, N.D., said that if Farm Credit System lenders want additional power, they should leave the system, as proscribed under existing law.

A representative for the Independent Community Bankers of America urged Congress to open access to Farm Credit System funds to community banks. The Farm Credit System, America's first government sponsored enterprise, has $119 billion in assets and currently holds 30 percent of the farm sector's total debt.
