New Kodak document scanner emphasizes ease of use, signals company's aggressive move into mid-volume market

Work Process Improvement Today, Jun 1998

Kodak Business Imaging Systems, the market leader in highvolume document scanning, has designed and developed a new mid-volume scanner with a robust document feeder and a very short paper path to bring simplified, high-performance scanning to the general office for both traditional image capture and Internet-based network applications.

The Kodak Digital Science(TM) Scanner features onebutton operation, contiuous document feeding, reliable high-quality image capture and a contemporary ergonomic design. The new model makes scanning as easy as other electronic office document tasks, and represents an aggressive push by Kodak into the midvolume market to serve decentralized, distributed and departmental environments.

Powerful, Fast and Effective

The remarkably uncomplicated, efficient design of the Scanner enables it to process from 1,000 to 5,000 lettersize pages per eight-hour shift to accommodate even demanding mid-volume production requirements. For front-office applicatioins where speed and image quality are paramount, the Scanner 3500 can scan 75 pages a minute (landscape) at high resolution.

Kodak's patented Adaptive Threshold Processor (ATP) automatically adjusts image capture for different document backgrounds and other variances to ensure optimal image quality. To further ensure image quality, the Scanner 3500 captures images at 600 dpi and utilizes a 256-level gray scale. The captured images are translated to a 200- or 300-dpi binary file, which results in a smaller image file that saves storage space.

The Scanner 3500 is designed for easy integration into existing PC workstations via any standard SCSI-2 interface. It comes bundled with industrystandard ISIS and TWAIN scanner software drivers for both the Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. The unit also includes test programs to verify correct installation and operation.

Along with the Scanner 3500 comes an innovative multimedia users guide to make operation and maintenance of the unit both simple and understandable. Kodak provides a oneyear limited warranty, as well as world-class Kodak service and on-site support.

Available in July

The Kodak Digital Science Scanner 3500, available in July, will come in simplex and duplex models at manufacturer's recommended prices of $16,990 and $20,990 respectively. They will be sold by authorized Kodak resellers throughout the world.
