New Crisis, The, Mar/Apr 2001

James 'JJ' Johnson, 77, master musician who defined post-World War II trombone playing, died of a self-- inflicted gunshot wound on February 4 in his hometown, Indianapolis, Ind. Johnson played with such legends as Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker.

Howell Perry, 69, an all-American football player at the University of Michigan who became the first black assistant coach in the National Football League and later chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, died on January 7 in Southfield, Mich.
