JSSR Index: 1977-1997

Journal of Social Studies Research, Fall 1997 by Witten, Barry

The Journal of Social Studies Research (JSSR) originally began as a publishing outlet for doctoral students' studies at the University of Georgia. It grew over the years to include manuscripts authored by social studies authorities and its readership has expanded nationally and internationally, e.g., O. L. Davis, W. C. Parker, M. Nelson, C. Sunal, M. Haas, and M. Laughlin. Throughout its history JSSR has published manuscripts concerned with teaching social studies in the elementary, middle, and secondary schools and with social studies teacher education. Manuscripts published have been and are within the parameters of quantitative, qualitative, and historical research.

Volumes I - XV were published at the University of Georgia with John Napier, Guy Larkins, and Michael Hawkins as editors. Volumes XVI - XX were published at Kansas State University with Ben Smith as editor.

The most popular topic throughout the first two decades of publication has been social studies methods, including instruction, instructional methods, textbooks, and curriculum. College, elementary, and secondary social studies were also popular topics. Articles regarding individual disciplines appeared in large numbers including some on history, geography, political science, sociology, economics, and anthropology. Other popular topics included multiculturalism, values, ability level, women's studies, religion, teacher attitudes, and the history of social studies education. The first special issue was a monograph by Patricia Grant Avery entitled "Policy Thought Among Children and Adolescents," included in the Fall 1988 issue. Social studies knowledge concerning pre-service elementary education majors, spearheaded by Warren McKinney, was the subject of the Summer 1990 issue. Another monograph was entitled "Remediation in Secondary Social Studies," included in the Spring 1991 issue. The spring 1996 issue was built around the theme of religion and public schooling.

Contributions to JSSR include many of the premier names in social studies education over the past twenty years. A. G. Larkens had eleven articles published, followed by W. McKinney with ten. Other authors who have at least four articles published in JSSR included C. T. Bennett, M. J. Ford, A. C. Gilmore, K. C. McKinney, B. A. Smith, R. L. VanSickle, M. Kleg, R. Karbinus, J. D. Napier, and J. J. Palmer.

The following "JSSR Index: 1977-1997,"is arranged alphabetically by authors' last names, with publication titles, dates, volumes, pages, and an abstract of the article. Where authors are not the first author, reference is made to the main entry under the last name of the first author. Following the main body of the Index, a "Subject Index," has been compiled to facilitate access to articles. It should be noted that the author listed under subject headings is the first author, used for location purposes only. The author of this "JSSR Index" has compiled it as a service to those who are engaged with or wish to engage with research in social studies education.
