Chevy back at Indy

Motor,  Jan 2002  by Nash, Tom

Chevrolet will return to open-wheel racing in 2002 with a new racing engine, the Chevy Indy V8. The new powerplant will make its debut in the Indy Racing League season-opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 2.

The new 3.5-liter engine is built on the design of previous GM Premium V racing engines, including the Aurora engine formerly used in the IRL. The methanol-fed V8 produces 675 hp at the IRL-mandated redline of 10,700 rpm. It's based on a bore of 93mm (3.66 inches) and a stroke of 64.4mm (2.53 inches) with 102mm bore centers. The all-aluminum powerplant features four valves per cylinder in DOHC configuration with chain camshaft drive and sequential EFI.
