NEWSBREAK
It was a time not unlike today. America had been shocked by an unexpected attack of unprecedented proportions upon its sovereign soil. The collective anger of the American citizenry resulted in a great surge of patriotism and unity.
Sixty years ago, in June of 1942, more than 500 American magazine publishers banded together to rekindle the spirit of patriotism by featuring the American flag on the cover of their June issues. The intention was also to encourage citizens to buy war bonds and stamps to help fund the war effort. It worked.
Recently published in a book titled United We Stand: Flying the American Flag, by Peter Gwillim Kreitler, a collection of more than 100 of the covers spans all types of periodicals. MOTOR Magazine stands proudly among them. These star-spangled covers are currently on display until October 28 at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, in Washington, DC.
Today, in mid-2002, we're once again proudly witnessing the collective efforts in so many ways of our citizens in promoting unity and patriotism-that uniquely American phenomenon that allows us to work together to overcome adversity.
