Now apply the brakes and completely stop the front wheels. Next, shift to Reverse, then into Neutral. Repeat these shifting procedures four more times, then shut down the engine. Repeat this drain, refill and subsequent shifting procedure twice more. Finally, completely drain the transmission, then reinstall the drain bolt using a new washer and do a final refill of the transmission with fresh ATF.
Next, disconnect the linear solenoid electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts and then the linear solenoid. Inspect the solenoid's mounting surface on the transmission for cleanliness, removing any dirt you find. Install the new linear solenoid (Part No. 28250-P4R-315) and reconnect the electrical connector. After you complete these procedures, roadtest the transmission. Once the harsh shift is corrected, erase the trouble codes from PCM memory.

Cracking turbo elbow hose. All 2000 9-3 vehicles within VINs Y2000001 through Y2018486 (3D/5D excluding Viggen) and Y7000001 through Y7006098 (all CV, 3D/5D Viggen) may show signs of poor driveability and canister purge inefficiency, due to the material used for the turbocharger elbow hose. The hose, which is fitted to the evacuation line near the turbo, is insufficient for the high surrounding temperatures, and can harden and crack. A new hose material has been introduced as of VINs Y2018486 and Y7006098, respectively.
The part number for the elbow hose is 53 30 477; the T-fitting (if required) is Part No. 91 94 069. However, when replacing the hose, note that the new elbow hose is marked with the old part number (4752671), but has a punch mark to the left of the number.
If you've got to replace the hose, undo the lower hose clamp on the elbow, then remove the elbow hose from the APC valve T-piece. If you happen to damage the T, replace it.
Now pull up the evacuation line. Undo and slide up the upper clamp on the elbow hose. Note the position of the elbow shape and remove the hose, then transfer the lower hose clamp to the new elbow. Position the hose clip 2 to 3mm from the hose end. Fit the new elbow hose to the evacuation line. Make sure the hose is positioned the same way as the old one.
Next, slide the upper clamp onto the elbow hose 2 to 3mm from the end. Pull the evacuation line down between the turbocharger's intake manifold and the hose to the a/c system expansion tank. Fit the elbow hose to the T. When all necessary clamps are tight and secure, the fix is complete.

Timing chain rattle. Some 19992002 Explorers and Mercury Mountaineers, and 2001-02 Explorer Sport Trac, Sport and Ranger models-all equipped with the 4.0L SOHC engine-may exhibit a timing chain rattle. The rattle is heard during both hot-engine and cold-engine operation, but is most noticeable when the engine is cold and under acceleration. The sound typically occurs at 2400 to 2500 rpm.
To detect the noise on a road test, accelerate in 2nd gear between 2000 and 3000 rpm and listen for a rattle that sounds similar to spark knock. If present, the noise may be created by the primary timing chain tensioner.
