Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedReplacement gas cap caution
Motor, Aug 2002 by Nash, Tom
According to research conducted by Stant Manufacturing, numerous gas tank caps supplied to the automotive aftermarket do not adhere to OEM specifications and pose a variety of safety and performance issues for motorists.
From a safety standpoint, "knock-off" caps may spill fuel in a crash or rollover, says Stant. They also can leak up to 30 gallons of fuel per year in the form of vapor, cause false error reports in the OBD II display and result in failed emissions inspections in some parts of the country. Stant says choosing the wrong cap can also impact vehicle warranties. This research underscores the importance of using OEM or OEM-approved gas caps.
