Motor, Sep 2002 by Nash, Tom
Governor Gray Davis recently signed landmark legislation to combat global warming, putting California at the forefront of a worldwide effort to reduce greenhouse gases. Assembly Bill 1493 requires the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to develop carbon dioxide pollution standards for vehicles in model year 2009 and beyond. The standards will apply to automakers' fleet averages, rather than individual vehicles.

Governor Davis said, "This is the first law in America to substantively address the greatest environmental challenge of the 21st century. In time, every state-and hopefully every country-will act to protect future generations from the threat of global warming. For California, that time is now." He emphasized that AB 1493 will not impose new vehicle or gasoline taxes and will not limit miles driven or require smaller, lighter or slower vehicles. Nor will it limit SUV, minivan or any other type of vehicle ownership. Californians will continue to be able to purchase vehicles of their choice.
