Motor, Mar 2003 by Nash, Tom
Chevy introduced a trio of new vehicles to be released over the next two years. The completely new 2004 Malibu is built on GM's global Epsilon platform. Two powertrains will be offered-the 140-hp, 2.2L Ecotec 4-cylinder and a new 200-hp version of the 3.5L V8, both matched to a four-speed autobox. Advanced suspension and luxury features will make the Malibu a threat to similarsize imports.
The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado, a.k.a. GMC Canyon, a midsize pickup, will be offered in three cab styles, three suspension packages and 2WD or 4WD. The Vortec 4200 16 fathered the engines used in the Colorado-a 2.8L 14 that produces 175 hp and 185 ft-lb of torque and a 3.5L 15 with 220 hp and 225 ft-lb of torque. Both use a balance shaft for smooth revving, electronic throttle, plus variable valve timing. A new ladder-type frame offers improved torsional rigidity.

Chevy finally gets into the compact sport/ute business with the 2005 Equinox. It will be offered in front-drive or all-wheel-drive versions, but the only powertrain available is a 3.4L V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission. The AWD system sends all power to the front wheels during normal conditions and to the back wheels as needed. The Equinox uses a front disc and rear drum brake system; ABS won't be standard.
