The Service Technicians Society (STS) held its Annual Meeting and Conference in Detroit recently in conjunction with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress. During the conference, Holly Pugliese of the EPA Mobile Certification and Enforcement Office gave an update of various states' OBD UM programs. She stated that malfunction of the O^sub 2^ sensor is one of the most prevalent problems, especially on highmileage vehicles.
Phil Trigiani of UView Ultraviolet Systems gave a glimpse into the future of automotive a/c service with a presentation of some of the latest advances in refrigerants, technologies, standards and methods.
Outgoing STS President Bob Pattengale chaired a panel discussion with experts on education and training future technicians. El Huntington of TTi, Ron Watkins of Reward Publishing and Ralph Birnbaum, author and publisher of automotive repair education books, gave their viewpoints on what their organizations are doing to facilitate automotive education. Kathleen O'Connor-Byrnes, Director of SAE's A World in Motion (AWIM), and Ro Schilke, AWIM advocate, gave an insight into the program's outreach to elementary school children.
