Unperformed maintenance reaches $62 billion

Motor,  Jun 2003  by Nash, Tom

Recent research by the Automotive Aftermarket Suppliers Association (AASA), the aftermarket market segment association of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), estimates unperformed motor vehicle maintenance in the United States at $62 billion in 2002, up from $58.3 billion in 2000.

Much of the unperformed maintenance can lead to safety concerns, which, along with the opportunity to grow the aftermarket business in North America, has led AASA and MEMA to announce their support of the "Be Car Care Aware" consumer education campaign.

"AASA and MEMA have been tracking the amount of unperformed personal vehicle maintenance in the United States, which can cause safety concerns on our nation's roads and highways," said Paul Foley, vice president of AASA. "We are pleased to support the Car Care Council in this effort to educate the public on the vital importance of properly maintaining their vehicles. We look forward to future cooperative efforts with automotive-related organizations working toward the common goal of creating increased business opportunities for those in our industry."
