What's in a name?

Pontiac's all-new entry in the midsize car segment in 2005-replacing the Grand Am-will be called the G6. It shares GM's all-new global Epsilon front-wheel-drive architecture with the Saab 9-3, Opel and Vauxhall Vectra, and Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx.

GM also announced the names of its four new crossover sport van (CSV) entries that will debut as 2005 models. Delivering a blend of mid-van versatility with SUV-like attributes, GM feels the new models take the segment in a new direction and will help the carmaker compete across a broader range of the highly competitive people- and cargo-carrying market.

Buick Terraza, the third entry in Buick's truck portfolio, will complement the Rendezvous and Rainier by blending the best qualities of Buick sedans with the utility that today's market demands.

Chevrolet Uplander is another addition to Chevy's growing portfolio of crossover vehicles that will include the 2005 Equinox and Malibu Maxx. The Uplander will feature improved interior refinement, a next-generation entertainment system and a long list of safety and convenience features.

GM hopes the Saturn BELAY, a flexible people-carrier with interior appointments reflecting the direction of future Saturn vehicles, will help grow the brand by attracting a new group of customers, plus meet the needs of existing Saturn owners with growing families and active lifestyles. The name RELAY is meant to convey the vehicle s ability to connect people and their destinations, says GM.

Pontiac Montana SV6 features new SUV-like design, interior refinements and an array of features. Current owners have valued the Montana for its unique sporty appearance and versatility, and GM has made an effort to enhance those qualities.

According to GM, the new vehicles will combine outstanding ride and handling, compelling styling and convenient features such as power sliding doors. Production will begin in the fourth quarter of 2004. The new CSVs are intended to bolster GM's sales and market coverage in the mid-van category-one of the automotive industry's most competitive.
