CRACKING THE EUROPEAN DATA SAFE

The Mercedes-Benz scanner software provides 1992-2001 model engine coverage, and can perform bidirectional actuator tests on most systems with many of the same capabilities of the factory tool. Coverage of many other vehicle systems is included, and ECU module replacement version coding can also be accomplished. It's the only aftermarket tool to access adaptation procedures similar to the factory tool, according to Snap-on.

For VW and Audi, Snap-on offers 1991-2002 coverage. All engine, transmission, ABS and air bag systems are supported. Up to 35 additional on-board systems are supported on models so equipped. Datastream recording and playback is also offered, as well as oil and service light resetting procedures. An Expert Mode provides advanced diagnostic factory tool capabilities.

Earlier this year, Vetronix formed an alliance with ETAS, a Robert Bosch spin-off. Vetronix has not previously offered diagnostic tools for European vehicles. However, ETAS has a selection of tools that have been in use in Europe for some time. As soon as these tools are modified for use on the European vehicles found in the U.S. market, Vetronix and ETAS have promised to make them available for sale to the after-market here. One tool to watch for from this alliance is the KTS 650, a PC-based diagnostic tool.

OTC does not currently have a European cartridge for its Genisys diagnostic tool, but we've been assured that one will, be available soon. We were given a demonstration of a preproduction unit at the recent AAPEX convention, and it looks like it will provide a wealth of diagnostic information on the major European vehicles. OTC has steadily added features and capabilities to the Genisys since its introduction, and the addition of European vehicle diagnostic capability represents another step in the right direction.

Several smaller tool manufacturers and distributors have been offering European diagnostic tools and information to their customers long before the larger tool and equipment companies decided to enter this segment of the market. Baum Tools has provided specialty tools to the aftermarket for European vehicles since 1959. Today, along with a complete selection of specialty hand tools, Baum offers the iSCAN, with coverage for Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo and Volkswagen, as well as Asian vehicles. For example, 1988-2001 BMW systems covered include Engine (gas and diesel), Transmission, Climate Control, ABS, SRS, Instrument Cluster and EWS Synchronization. On Mercedes-Benz, BASIC, PRO and MASTER software versions are offered, with escalating capabilities. Over eight years of development have gone into designing and updating the iSCAN's European and Asian vehicle software. A diagnostic hotline for troubleshooting and hardware technical support is also offered.

Some shops with factory scan tools such the Mercedes STAR System or the BMW GT1 still find the iSCAN to be useful for their diagnostic work.

Autoland Scientech offers the Vehicle Diagnostic System (VeDiS). A European cartridge includes coverage for diagnosis of major systems on Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Volvo vehicles. The D91 (offered by Baum Tools as the iSCAN) and D51 tools are also available. Autoland launched its own website this year, and continues to market its products in this country through selected distributors.
