MOTOR editors are saddened to report the passing of Joe Woods, noted technical writer. Joe began his automotive writing career as Technical Editor with Super Service Station (later Super Automotive Service), followed by stints in similar capacities with MOTOR, Motor Age, MOTOR (again) and Import Service. He established an unofficial record (unlikely to be broken) for holding positions with the largest number of national automotive trade magazines. In recent years, Joe continued to accept a variety of writing, editing and photography assignments.

Joe also was a pioneering member, contributor and moderator of the CompuServe "Techs Only" online forum, a predecessor of the International Automotive Technicians Network (iATN). Readers may also remember the many insightful, informative and entertaining technical articles he contributed to this publication, as well as to the others mentioned above.

Joe had a voracious intellect, a quick wit and a natural gift with language (both spoken and written). His frontiersman appearance startled some the first time they met him, but his generous spirit was unequaled. He was an honored member of the tech writer brotherhood who never hesitated to share his knowledge with readers and writers alike, regardless of their affiliation. His nonmechanical interests included music, science, philosophy and literature.

Joe is survived by his wife of 37 years, Catherine Copley-Woods, daughters Haddayr Copley-Woods, Alaunde Copley-Woods, Noe Woods and Djuna Copley-Woods, and a very large extended family. His family has established an educational scholarship in his memory to benefit working mechanics.
