Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedHonda Adds Accord to Its Line of Hybrids
Motor, Oct 2004 by Nash, Tom
Honda will debut the all-new 2005 Accord Hybrid sedan at dealerships in December. It will be the world's first V6-powered hybrid vehicle and Honda's third hybrid model, joining the Insight and Civic.
The Accord Hybrid will feature the third generation of Hondas advanced Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) full hybrid system, combined with new Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder deactivation technology.
The gasoline engine is a 3.OL SOIiC i-VTEC that produces 255 hp and 232 ft.-lbs. of torque. It's mated to a 12kW/16-hp permanent magnet electric motor with a torque rating of 100 ft.-lbs. A five-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the ground. Like Hondas other systems, the nominal voltage is 144V, produced by 120 1.2V Ni-MH cells. A DC-to-DC inverter steps the 144V down to 12V for powering the conventional operational systems.
The EPA has given the Accord Hybrid a rating of 30 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. With its introduction, Honda now becomes the first company in the world to offer three distinct hybrid models, including the first V6 hybrid.
