ASE Offers Bilingual Certification Testing

Motor,  Feb 2005  by Nash, Tom

The U.S. Dept. of Labor has announced plans to fund a $300,000 grant for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) to provide a limited number of the ASE certification exams in a parallel English/Spanish format. The first bilingual tests will be available for the May test administration.

According to government statistics, there are more than 150,000 Hispanics employed as automobile technicians; of that total, approximately 60,000 are believed to have limited English-language abilities. This program is intended to build a bridge to this group of linguistically isolated technicians and afford them the opportunity to participate in the ASE certification program while they continue to develop their English language skills.

The tests selected for this offering are the four most often taken by firsttime test takers and in high demand by employers: Al - Engine Repair, A4 - Suspension and Steering, A5 Brakes and A6 - Electrical/Electronic Systems. Only the regular certification tests are being offered in this bilingual format; recertification tests are not part of this program. All of the forms for these ASE tests will have both English and Spanish sections, making the bilingual format available at the more than 750 test centers located throughout the country.

"Offering this language assistance program is in line with ASE s mission of supporting better vehicle service to consumers by making the ASE certification tests available to a diverse technician population," said Ron Weiner, ASE President. "The Dept. of Labors grant will facilitate ASEs ability to reach out to Spanish-speaking auto service technicians to engage them with our testing and certification process."
