Sewing Project: Four-Panel Room Divider

What's New, Mar/Apr 2004 by Sakuyama, Ryoko

A popular trend now is the room divider. Designed to let you disguise an "unsightly" corner in a room or call attention to a special area, room dividers can be customized to fit any décor. Janome created this reversible four-panel screen with alternating embroidered panels. The middle of each panel uses a yarn effect that allows light to filter through. The yarn insets can also be cinched in the middle for a more open look.

The instructions below are for a standard 21-1/4'' × 58'' panel with 1-3/4''rod pockets along the top and bottom. It is easy to make your own pattern from the fabric panels that come with your purchased frame. Decorative metal room dividers can be purchased from stacksandstacks.com, and are available at numerous home and variety stores.

How to Win at Office Politics

Like it or not, every workplace is a political environment. But operating effectively within it doesn’t have to mean sucking up, lying, or slinging dirt. In its purest form, office politics is simply about getting from here to there: securing a promotion, seeing an idea come to fruition, or gaining support to make an organizational change. Playing the game well is about defending your position, earning respect, exchanging favors, and keeping your sanity amid the chaos. To get started, you need to know what you really want from work, then orient your political moves toward those goals. It all starts with strong relationships and helping others; those people in return make up the support system that helps you realize your goals. Here’s how it’s done.

TSA Fumbled Airline Security; Time For an Actual Leader

By now, everyone has heard of the failed bombing of Delta/Northwest flight 253. This was frighteningly close to being a disaster, but the bomb didn't go off. Now the only disaster we have is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and its abysmal handling of the situation. It might surprise you to know that there still isn't anyone leading the TSA right now; President Obama's long-delayed nomination is sitting with the Senate, blocked by a lonely Republican senator. This is unacceptable.
