Annual Report January 1997 to January 1998

This is the 67th annual report of the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE). This report summarizes the ACPE's activities covering the period January 1997 to January 1998, and is available to the profession and to the general public.

Meetings

The ACPE Board of Directors met January 11-13,1997, in Palm Beach, FL; and June 14-161997, in New Orleans, LA. The ACPE public interest panel met January 7, 1997, and June 2, 1997, in Chicago, IL; the ACPE Continuing Education Committee met on October 15,1997, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS OF PHARMACY

Accreditation Actions Taken: Candidate Status or Accreditation Status Granted

On the basis of self-studies, on-site evaluations conducted during the reporting year, communications received from the institutions, and comments of the Public Interest Panel, the ACPE determined the accreditation status along with specified terms and conditions of 23 professional programs, representing 16 Colleges or Schools of Pharmacy. (Note: The Directory of Accredited Professional Degree Programs of Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy designates the respective accreditation status of all programs accredited by ACPE and the academic year for the next currently scheduled evaluation of the professional programs.) The accreditation actions taken are as follows.

University of Southern California School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued.

Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Candidate accreditation status was granted (advancement from precandidate status).

Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued.

University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued. In accord with the College's professional program transition the accreditation of the Baccalaureate in Pharmacy Program extends through June 30, 1998. University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued. In accord with the College's professional program transition the accreditation of the Baccalaureate in Pharmacy Program extends through June 30, 1998.

Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued.

University of Michigan College of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued.

University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued. In accord with the School's professional program transition the accreditation of the Baccalaureate in Pharmacy Program extends through June 30, 1999.

Campbell University School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Accreditation status was continued.

Temple University School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy and Baccalaureate in Pharmacy Programs: Accreditation status was continued.

University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Initial accreditation was granted to the Doctor of Pharmacy Program and the accreditation status of the Baccalaureate in Pharmacy program was continued.

Wilkes University School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Candidate status was granted (advancement from precandidate status).

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Candidate status was granted (advancement from precandidate status).

University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy and Baccalaureate in Pharmacy Programs: Accreditation status was continued.

Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Candidate status was granted (advancement from precandidate status).

West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, Doctor of Pharmacy Program: Initial accreditation was granted. In accord with the School's professional program transition the accreditation of the Baccalaureate in Pharmacy program extends to June 30, 2000.

Precandidate Accreditation Status Granted.

On the basis of an application, an on-site evaluation, comments from the Public Interest Panel, and a presentation by the University President and Dean of the College, ACPE granted Precandidate status (the first of the two preaccreditation steps) to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Midwestern University College of Pharmacy-Glendale, Arizona.

Consideration of an Application for Precandidate Status. The request for precandidate accreditation status of the Doctor of Pharmacy program of Hampton University School of Pharmacy, Hampton, Virginia, was considered on the basis of an application and a presentation by the University Provost, the Vice President for Business Affairs/Treasurer, the Dean and the Associate Dean of the School of Pharmacy. The Council acted to permit the precandidate accreditation process to progress. An on-site evaluation was authorized, to be conducted during Spring 1998, so as to provide the basis for the Council's consideration of precandidate accreditation status at its June 1998 meeting.
