Minutes of the AACP Board of Directors Meeting: February 27-28, 2003, Long Beach, California

On MOTION (Nahata/Kerr) Dr. Irwin Kuntz (UCSF) was selected as the 2003 Volwiler Research Achievement Award recipient.

On MOTION (Nahata/Kerr) the paper entitled "Students' Perceptions of Their Preparation to Provide Pharmaceutical Care" by L. Doug Ried, Gayle A. Brazeau, Carole Kimberlin and Michael McKenzie was selected for the 2003 Eyman Award. Board members Brazeau and Speedie excused themselves from this selection to avoid conflicts of interest.

9. Honorary President Selection and Recognition

The Board reviewed the history of and procedures associated with the selection and recognition of honorary presidents. It noted that "long and distinguished service to the Association" was still relevant as a determining factor in awarding this recognition and asked that the 2003 Nominations Committee suggest additional guidance that can be utilized in considering future candidates for Honorary President. The Board reiterated that the Awards Banquet was an appropriate venue for the recognition and that appropriate recognition in AACP News and the annual meeting program should be standard coverage of the recipient's selection. In addition, it was suggested that a section on the AACP website should profile all past honorary presidents.

10. Selection of Editorial Board Members for AJPE

Editor DiPiro presented recommendations for selection of an expanded number of members of the Editorial Advisory Board for the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. By CONSENSUS, an amended version of the selection process was approved by the Board for use in appointing the advisory board.

By CONSENSUS the Board approved formation of a Task Force on Journal Improvement. President-elect Kerr will present a list of task force members to the Board in April with other standing and special committee appointments.

11. Nature and Extent of AACP's International Involvement

Executive Vice President Maine presented an analysis of AACP's past and present international activities, including membership in and support of FIP. The Board affirmed the strategic importance of maintaining a visible role in international affairs to position AACP and its members in appropriate leadership roles with colleagues around the world. The Board reviewed the status of current deliberations within FIP on its categories of organizational membership and reaffirmed the decision to discontinue Ordinary Membership in FIP. Executive Vice President Maine will work with FIP leaders as they define a different category of membership for organizations and will pledge AACP's active involvement in the 2004 FIP meeting to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Appropriate communications regarding AACP's commitment to participation in global pharmacy and pharmaceutical education organizations will be prepared.

12. Priorities for the 108th Congress

Will Lang, AACP Director of Government Affairs, presented legislative priorities for the 108lh Congress, including reintroduction and passage of legislation providing support for students, faculty and information systems for the nation's colleges and schools of pharmacy. In addition, AACP will seek reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, seek modifications in and increase funding for Title VII programs, and increase appropriations for Indian Health Service residency and loan repayment programs for pharmacy graduates.
