Pitcairn

Wings of Gold, Fall 2003 by Claar, Merwyn

Pitcairn. Members of the Pitcairn Squadron of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania enjoyed a luncheon cruise on the scenic Deleware River aboard the Spirit of Philadelphia in May.

The LT Matthew T. Claar Memorial Sword, honoring the son of Merwyn and Jennie Claar, an F-14 pilot killed in a crash aboard USS Abraham Lincoln in the Indian Ocean in 1993, was presented to Midshipman (now ENS) John P. Houston, of Villanova University's NROTC program. The sword goes to the individual who has achieved high academic and leadership marks and who has elected to serve as a Naval Aviator. ENS Houston, a finance major ranking 8 out of 39 with a grade average of 3.52, was Company Commander in the Fall semester, responsible for 40 midshipmen.

The award is financed by generous contributions from two of LT Claar's former squadron mates. The Pitcaim Squadron has awarded a sword to the top NROTC Aviation candidate at Villanova since 1991.
