Parents' expressions of disappointment may be the best way to discipline sixth- and seventh-graders, according to researchers at Ohio State University. Saying things such as, "I would never expect you to do something like that," were more helpful in disciplining this age group than other forms of punishment.

Researchers found that asking kids to behave better and explaining the negative consequences of their misbehavior for others produced more empathy and helpful behavior in early adolescents.
