Switchfoot
Group, May/Jun 1999 by Belknap, Bryan
SONG: "New Way to Be Human" (from the release New Way to Be Human)
THEME: Trends pass, Jesus lasts
SYNOPSIS: Fads come and go, but Jesus' redemption makes us new creatures for eternity.
BACKGROUND: This young So Cal trio returns with an amazingly mature set. Their second album continues to explore surf, pop, and rock influences by mixing them into a fun, full, and accessible sound. What sets Switchfoot apart are their witty, insightful lyrics that always set Christ's hope and redemption against the emptiness the world offers. The standout cut is "Something More" which explores Augustine's life and feelings before finding Christ (and sainthood).
STUDY: Ask the group: What are some fads that have come and gone in your life? Have kids form small groups; then play the song. Read aloud Hebrews 1:7-12 and Colossians 3:10. Ask: What's the greatest change you've undergone personally? What do you hope never changes? Close in prayer, asking Jesus to deepen kids' faith in his unchanging love for each of them.
