As prices drop on CD recorders or "burners," homemade CD compilations are becoming the gift-to-give among teenagers and college students. CD recorders-available as stand-alone units for stereo systems or as built-in or add-on drives for PCs-still have a way to go before they're mass-market affordable, but the demand for blank CD-R audio format discs has already skyrocketed. Sales estimates for this year predict consumers will purchase almost one billion discs. A disc sells for $6, and its price includes copyright royalties to the music industry.
