mission impossible 2 (pg-13)
Tom Cruise is IMF agent Ethan Hunt for the sequel to the 1996 smash Mission Impossible. Ving Rhames returns, along with newcomers Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, and baddie Dougray Scott. High testosterone and action abound, thanks to Hong Kong action director John Woo (Face Off, Broken Arrow), the man responsible for turning gun battles into high art. The tangled plot involves Hunt's mad dash to rescue the world from the release of a lethal virus.
Whether or not you directly reference the film, the
title "Mission Impossible" lends itself to a good study. We're God's secret agents here, desperately trying to save the world from the deadly "virus" of sin that condemns every human to eternal spiritual death. The seemingly impossible mission of spreading the lifesaving gospel message worldwide rests on our shoulders. Thankfully, our secret weapon isn't a slick spy gadget or a gun, but the Holy Spirit and God's Word.
Play the theme music from Mission Impossible. Ask: What thoughts come to mind when you hear this song? How is following Jesus like being a secret agent? Have kids form groups of four and read aloud 1 Corinthians 9:16-19. Ask: Do you have the urgency of someone who must "save the world?" Why or why not? How do you stay faithful in the face of an "impossible" mission? Are you an undercover agent? Why or why not? What can we do to accomplish the mission?
