Orlando, Florida, has a brand-new theme park with attractions and characters inspired by the Bible rather than Hollywood. The Holy Land Experience distills thousands of years of biblical history into a three- to four-hour journey, during which visitors explore such landmarks as Herod's Temple, the Qumran caves, the Via Dolorosa, and the Garden Tomb. Familiar biblical characters relate their stories, a film presentation brings alive key moments from the Old and New Testaments, and at the Wilderness Tabernacle, an actor playing the role of Aaron re-enacts a ceremony centered on the Ark of the Covenant.

Sega's Dreamcast game Shenmue takes players into a 3D re-creation of an actual city-Yokosuka, Japan, circa 1986. There they can engage in like-real experiences such as visiting shops, purchasing items and playing video games in an arcade-as the time of day and weather keep changing. And kids may soon be adding their own images to their favorite game characters. An Atlanta company called 3Q has created cloning booths that allow players to upload their own likeness to a limited selection of games for $30 each.

ringing up profits

The first installment of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic tale The Lord of the Rings won't be in movie theaters until Christmas, but New Line Cinema has kicked off a huge promotional push with the launch of LordoftheRings.net. Over the next three years, the Web site will release a treasure-trove of information designed to keep audiences enthralled and tie-in products profitable strategy likely to become common as Hollywood searches for ways to exploit the Internet. Coming attractions on the site include an interactive map of Middle-earth that highlights various sections of Tolkien's fantasy world.
