The Comprehensive Guide to Youth Ministry Counseling

What it is: This practical, issues-based guide helps youth workers deal realistically with a broad range of counseling situations.

The scoop: Thirteen experienced counseling experts contribute to this 25-chapter guide, which covers issues such as crisis-counseling situations (suicide and pregnancy), teenage addictions (alcohol, drug abuse, and eating disorders), and developmental issues (stress, gender questions, and identity search). Each chapter includes practical ideas for dealing with a particular issue, guidelines for knowing when to refer, real-life examples, resource ideas, and even "student pages" to help teenagers look honestly and openly at these topics. The one drawback is a lack of information about general counseling principles. More foundational teaching on how to counsel would've strengthened this excellent resource. Overall, though, this is a relevant, up-to-date, and highly practical resource.
