MUSIC

song: "I Am Understood" (from Two Lefts Don't Make a Right. . . But Three Do)

topic: Intimacy with God

theme: God understands us.

background: Relient K's third album proves their prowess at writing great songs that brim with wicked guitar riffs, transcendent harmonies, and witty lyrics. Behind the hilarity ("Mood Rings") and the silliness ("In Love with the '80s"), though. Relient K surprises with genuinely deep religious beliefs. Whether crawling back to God after yet another spiritual failure ("Trademark"), amazement at God's mercy ("Getting Into You"), or intimacy with God ("I Am Understood"), they refuse to bury their faith under power chords and pop hooks. These guys know how to sing about the issues that face young people everywhere, such as relationships (personal and romantic), school, gossip, and spirituality. Relient K demonstrates that Christians can craft phenomenal punk music and have a blast doing it.

discussion questions: Ask: Who understands you best in the whole world? Why do you connect so well with this person? Can a human being find complete intimacy with another person? Why or why not? Read aloud Luke 12:7. What does the phrase "intimacy with God" mean to you? How have you experienced intimacy with God in your life? What prevents you from developing an even greater closeness to God?
