SONG: "Vertigo" (from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb)

TOPIC: Foundation

THEME: God's love is a solid foundation in the midst of life's confusion.

BACKGROUND: U2 proves their continued relevance on a stunning new album that weaves The Edge's trademark guitar work throughout Bono's songs of faith, hope, and love. Though their sound has influenced countless bands, the secret to U2's enduring success has always been their lyrical focus on the human condition rather than on personal neurosis. In Original of the Species," for example, the singer (possibly God) affirms the beautiful individuality of a woman, echoing Psalm 139 in contemporary terms. Almost every song contains a spiritual nugget, and I hope this album will finally satisfy all those people who continue to question the authenticity and depth of Christian faith held by three-quarters of U2's band members.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: Ask: What physical effects does vertigo have on a person? Why does Bono use this term to describe life? In what life circumstances are you most likely to experience vertigo? What might people use as their foundation when life spins out of control? What do you typically rely on? Read aloud Matthew 7:24-27. Ask: What does Jesus say forms the only lasting foundation? How does Bono voice this opinion in the song? What are some ways a person can "kneel" and connect with God as a secure foundation? What's one problem that you might approach differently if you really built your foundation on Christ and God's Word?
