New AAUP Guidebooks Available
Academe, Jan/Feb 2006 by Bradley, Gwendolyn
The AAUP is pleased to announce the publication of two new guidebooks. Navigating Faculty Appointments: Questions and Answers, by Jonathan Knight, director of the AAUP's academic freedom and tenure program, guides faculty members through questions about employment offers, evaluations and reviews, academic freedom, tenure requirements, and other topics.
Pregnancy in the Academy: Questions and Answers explains how the Pregnancy Discrimination Act applies to women in the academic workplace. The guidebook, written by Saranna Thornton, professor of economics at Hampden-Sydney College, addresses such issues as the differences between pregnancy disability leave and family medical leave, the application of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to job interviews and the promotion and tenure process, and academic employees' rights under the act.
These books join guides to salary equity, effective lobbying, faculty handbooks as enforceable contracts, and the Family and Medical Leave Act in the AAUP's series designed to inform faculty and other higher education professionals about areas in which the AAUP frequently receives questions. AAUP members receive a discount on the guidebooks, which can be ordered online at www.aaup. org/catalogue/pubs.htm.
