NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN

Academe,  Sep/Oct 2006  by Kreiser, B Robert

The Association's 2006 annual meeting voted to place New Mexico Highlands University on the list of censured administrations following a report on president Manny Aragon's denial of tenure to two faculty members, one of whom he summarily dismissed for reasons that the investigating committee found were in violation of academic freedom (see the investigating committee's report on pages 52-70 of the May-June issue). One month later, citing the Highlands censure among other matters of concern reported by the press during his two-year tenure in office, the university's board of regents reached an agreement with Aragon whereby he has stepped down from the presidency.
