Exide to upgrade Canadian battery plant

Advanced Battery Technology, Feb 2001

To meet the growing North American demand for sealed industrial batteries, Exide Technologies, Princeton, New Jersey, has announced plans to invest $21 million to reopen and upgrade a manufacturing facility in Maple, Ontario. Electronic News says Exide will manufacture both Absolyte and Champion sealed industrial batteries at the plant. The Absolyte brand is designed for backup power systems in voice, data, and multimedia communications networks, while the Champion brand is designed to power battery systems in lift trucks, mining, and other commercial vehicles. Initial production is expected to start April 1, with full operation in place by October.

By reopening the Maple plant, the company is attempting to strengthen its foothold in the industrial and transportation energy-storage sectors. Late in September Exide acquired what is now its GNB Industrial Power Global Business Unit, a global supplier of industrial and transportation batteries, from Pacific Dunlop Ltd. for $368 million. At the time, the company also changed its name from Exide Corp. to Exide Technologies.
