Freedonia study predicts world battery demand

Advanced Battery Technology, Feb 2001

A new study from Freedonia, World Batteries, predicts aggregate world demand for primary and secondary battery products will increase nearly 8% per year through 2004 to $60 billion. The best prospects will continue to be found in less advanced nations whose electrical and electronic equipment markets are growing rapidly.

The study also anticipates global demand for secondary batteries will exhibit somewhat faster growth than primary types through the early years of the new century. Key growth areas include lithium ion- and lithium polymer-based rechargeable batteries, and "superpremium" alkaline batteries able to run high-drain products such as cellular phones and camcorders. More specialized batteries such as primary lithium and zinc-air types also hold above-average growth potential in most countries.

The world battery industry has undergone a substantial amount of restructuring and consolidation in recent years, and further consolidation is expected.

World Batteries is available for $4,600 from the Battery Bookstore, P.O. Box 650, Boalsburg, PA 16827, phone: (814) 466-6559, fax: (814) 466-2777, or use the secure website: www.7ms.com
