China excludes button cells from rule

Advanced Battery Technology,  Jun 2001

According to a circular released by the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association, says Industry News, mainland China's customs bureau has changed its confusing new regulation regarding mercury content in batteries.

In February, China enforced inspection of all imported batteries to ensure mercury composition was below 0.025% of the overall battery weight. Batteries with too much mercury were forbidden to be imported or exported. The Shenzhen Entry-Exit Inspection and Guarantine Bureau of the People's Republic of China found almost all button cell batteries for quartz watches over the limit because of their small size and light weight.

In late March instructions were given by the central government that inspections on button cells are temporarily suspended, but companies in mainland China must make a declaration for a fee on the specific kinds of batteries they sell. Each declaration costs RMB20, is valid for one year, and may contain a few models with the same brand name. Other batteries will be inspected as usual.
