Advanced Battery Technology, Sep 2001
For $20, Electric Fuel Corp. sells its Instant Power Charger that includes a cable that plugs into a cell phone or PDA and attaches to a two-inch-square power cartridge.
The unit's cord and power cartridge come enclosed in an airtight carrying case. The charger is activated by removing the zinc power source from its wrapping. A set of small holes in the casing allows air to circulate into the battery, and the power cartridge delivers its full operating voltage and current in less than a minute. A full charge takes two hours. After the recharge is finished, the user puts the power cartridge back into the case. When the flow of outside air ceases, the battery becomes dormant. Each cartridge handles up to three charges and can also be used to power a phone or PDA for hours.

The unit has a shelf life of up to three years if left unopened. Once opened, it should be used within three months. When the cartridge is exhausted, it can be discarded and replaced for $10. The cable is reusable.
