Miyachi's weld checker maximizes cycle time

Advanced Battery Technology, Sep 2001

Miyachi's newest weld checker, the MM-360A, enables users to monitor force and current waveforms both individually and, for the first time, simultaneously, on a handheld unit with large LCD display. This feature enables it to initiate current at the precise time that force is stabilized, eliminating unnecessary squeeze times, thus maximizing cycle times and creating stronger, more robust welds.

When electrodes first contact the parts to be welded, an impact force occurs, followed by an unavoidable "ringing" which starts out high and gradually decreases as the electrode force builds up to the weld current firing force. If the weld current is initiated before this ringing is stabilized, inconsistent welds may occur as the resistance continually changes with the movement of parts and/or electrodes.

The MM-360A, which weighs just 1.1 pounds, measures current up to 199.9kA and force form 1.10 to 110 pounds. It comes with an optional hand-held printer or may be used with a computer via an RS-232 interface.
