Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedSolar-powered crossing warning system
Advanced Battery Technology, Dec 2001
Central Electronics of India has developed a solar-powered level crossing radio warning system called Solagard which can be used on single or double-track lines, says International. Railway. The system furnishes audio and visual alarms at crossings using a VHF link activated by an approaching train which is 5 to 2km from the crossing.
Solagard's remote and crossing equipment uses its own power supply consisting of solar photovoltaic panels and batteries. The system is controlled by electronic processor.

The use of radio avoids the need for costly copper wires which are often prone to theft, and solar power means the system does not have to rely on connection to electricity power lines, which may be difficult in remote areas.
