Advanced Battery Technology, Jan 2002
NESS Capacitor Company Ltd. introduces the first 2.7V ultracapacitors. With a continuous operating voltage rating higher than 2.5V, it is available in three sizes: 1,700, 3,500 and 5,000 Farads. The 5,000 Farad model has an energy density of 5.8 watt-hours per kilogram, and an ESR value of only 0.4 milliohms, at currents of over 500 amps. These durable, efficient, high capacity energy storage components are revolutionizing the power market by reducing battery size requirements, extending battery life expectancy, and improving peak power availability.
The key to the performance of the ultracapacitor is its porous carbon electrodes. The component is ideal for high peak power applications, such as electric vehicle, hybrid electric vehicle acceleration and braking, industrial actuation and control, wind and fuel cell power conversion, and uninterruptible power supply switch-over bridging
With 10 times the power density of a similar battery and the capacity of being charged and discharged 100 times faster, ultracapacitors are finding their greatest use as intermediate power sources, or battery performance enhancers. This way they aid the primary power source by reducing the required battery size and by extending the effective life span. Properly implemented in a power-sourcing scheme, the ultracapacitor delivers peak power demanded by the load, allowing a smaller battery to be used as the primary power source. Repeated high power demands are the primary cause of premature aging. By supplying the peak load demands, it helps the battery last longer.
Samples subjected to more than 500,000 charge and discharge cycles show a typical 20% loss of capacitance and a 2X increase in ESR. The long life span of this capacitor means that it may never need to be replaced and can help the designer make a product me8t its power performance objectives, while keeping the overall product size and cost to a minimum.
