Toyota hybrid EV sales top 100,000 mark

Advanced Battery Technology, Jul 2002

Toyota Motor Corp. recently announced that global cumulative sales of its hybrid electric vehicles have topped 100,000. The company estimates that sales totaled 103,000 units by the end of March, representing a 90% share of the world HEV market.

The Toyota hybrid-electric platform is headed by the Prius, the first HEV to be mass-produced worldwide. Sales of the Prius HEV, which debuted in Japan in December 1997 and the United States in June 2000, have totaled more than 89,000 units, and the car is sold in more than 20 countries. The company added the Estima hybrid minivan in June 2001, and a hybrid version of the Crown luxury sedan in August 2001 to its HEV lineup in Japan.
