VRB awarded wind farm developmenmt contract

Advanced Battery Technology,  Sep 2002

Hydro Tasmania has awarded a contract to Pinnacle VRB to supply and install a vanadium redox battery for a wind farm expansion in King Island, Australia. Hydro Tasmania project manager, Andrew Hickman, said this was the first battery of its type to be installed in Australia and the first in the world to be used in this role of providing stability to a wind farm.

The vanadium redox battery was chosen over a conventional lead acid battery because of its longevity, environmental benefits, lower life cycle costs, high charge and discharge rates, and the ease of expansion in the future. Its purpose will be to smooth the power output of the wind farm and allow the maximum use of the available wind energy. Installation will occur in early 2003.
