Moltech is now SION Power Corporation

Advanced Battery Technology, Sep 2002

Moltech Corp., a developer of next generation lithium rechargeable batteries, has begun doing business as SIGN Power Corp.

According to President and Chief Executive Officer Frank M. Shinneman, the change emphasizes the company's objective of incorporating the power of sulfur ions into rechargeable lithium batteries for mobile electronic markets.

Current state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries use lithium-ion chemistry. The company's product under development offers a new chemistry based on lithium and sulfur. "Accordingly, we chose to combine the letter 'S' -- the chemical symbol for sulfur - with the words 'ion' and 'power' into a new name that helps to better communicate our company's primary focus," said Shinneman.

With the potential for up to five times higher energy per pound, lithium-sulfur batteries are expected to be the leading source of power in 3G cell phones, laptops, and other mobile electronic products in the near future. The chemistry also has exciting potential for use in hybrid electric vehicles and power tools.
