Electric Vehicle Record Breaker

Advanced Battery Technology, Nov 2003

When Fiamm batteries powered a high-tech milk float into the record books recently in the United Kingdom, engineers used the company's new wire-free telemetry system to obtain battery data during the record attempt. This enabled the team to make the best use of the available battery power and set a new world speed record.

The inaugural event, ratified by the World Milk Float Speed Association (WMFSA) took place at Bruntingthorpe proving ground, Leicestershire, on August 27. The world record was both set and broken.

The Fiamm-powered El50, driven by Richard Rozhon of South Wales and built by VXL Automotive, part of the Symonds Group, recorded a speed of 72.75mph. This was more than 20mph faster than earlier in the day using batteries supplied by Fiamm's two main UK competitors. The Fiamm-powered vehicle also set a new record for the standing quarter-mile of 23.49 seconds. The electric vehicles of VXL Automotive complement Symonds business in supermarket trolleys and powered mobile equipment.
