'Music and the aesthetics of modernity' is the title of an interdisciplinary conference to be held at Harvard University from 9-11 November. Speakers will include Carolyn Abbate, Scott Burnham, Lydia Goehr, Klaus Kropfinger, David Lewin, Anthony Newcomb, Charles Rosen and Leo Treitler. Ursula Oppens will give a piano recital.
Karlheinz Stockhausen is the featured composer at the Barbican Centre's 'Elektronic', a week of concerts and other events which runs from 13-18 October. Highlights include such classics of the genre as Hymnen, Telemusik, Kontakte, and extracts from his ongoing Licht project, notably, on Monday 15 October, a complete performance of 'Friday'. The 42nd Little Missenden Festival of Music and the Arts, co-masterminded by MT contributor Richard Drakeford, runs from 12-21 October and includes a programme of 16th-century Venetian music, a concert by Collegium Musicum 90, a recital in which Robin Blaze sings English lute songs, a chamber evening featuring Rubbra's Second Violin Sonata, and the first performance of John Webb's specially commisioned ... into a several world for accordion and cello. The eleventh London Bach Festival will take place between 31 October and 9 November, when half-a-dozen Bach-- centred concerts will be held in a variety of venues. Events include a complete performance of the Musical offering, a recital and masterclass by the Japanese organist Kei Koito, and a selection of cantatas. .
The Suffolk Villages Festival, which has been held annually in August for the past thirteen years, is all set for a modest expansion. A winter concert series, featuring MT contributor Peter Holman, will be held between 21 October 2001 and 26 May 2002, at St Mary's Church, Boxford, and St Mary's Church, Hadleigh. `Related rocks', a two-part celebration of the music of Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg, will take place at London's South Bank Centre from 27 November -9 December 2001 and 6-10 February 2002. Performers will include the Philharmonia Orchestra, Lindberg's experimental music ensemble Toimii, the London Sinfonietta and the Arditti Quartet. Highlights will include the UK premiere of Cantigas, the London premieres of Parada and the Cello Concerto, and performances of Kraft and Aura. Details: .
