ARIZONA

Tony Eden, Matt Hammond,

Christopher Yang and Frank Scaturro of the Scottsdale Aquatic Club achieved two national reportable times at the Arizona Age Group Championships held March 2022 in Scottsdale. The quartet posted winning times of 1:59.02 in the 11-12 boys 200 yard medley relay and 4:18.99 in the 400 yard medley relay.

The phoenix Swim Club sent a team of 21 swimmers to teh Far Western Age Group Championships April 2-5 in Walnut Creek, Calif. John Zemaitis, 14, won the high-oint award for his age group and was the 500 free champion (4:45:.25). Other top-eight finalists were Alexia Aron and Skye Elbert (9-10 girls), Kylr Shores (1112 boys), Meghan DeVinney and Cara DeVinney (13-14 girls), and Chris Collins and Mike Wurzelbacher (13-14 boys). Ten outstanding relays, including victories in the 13-14 girls and boys 800 free relay, fueled Phoenix to a fourth-place finish, the team's best ever at this meet.

CALIFORNIA

Paul Gyorfi of Carlmont High School won the consolation finals of both the 50 yard (21.65) and the 100 (48.25) freestyle at the Central Section Championships May 9 in San Jose. In the process, he shattered school records and qualified for this summer's USS junior championship meet. Gyorfi led Carlmont to a 28th-place finish, its best showing in over two decades.

St. Francis' Katie Younglove and Lincoln's Matt Smart each won two events at the CIF Sacramento High School Championships May 14-16 in Lodi. Younglove captured the 500 yard free (4:52.94) and 100 fly (55.70); Smart won the 100-200 free (44.74-1:38.72). Ryan Jones of Davis High set the only sectional record with his 50.11 in the 100 back. St. Francis won the women's title with 326 points to Armijo's 191 and Davis' 186. On the men's side, Davis was tops with 304 points to Jesuit's 229 and Lincoln's 203. #lDl

The Riviera Swim Team's 11-12 girls relay team placed second in both the 200 yard free relay and 200 medley relay at the Age Group State Meet March 13-15 in Indianapolis. Christine Sheehorn, Megan Sobecki, Elizabeth Bodle and Susan Hentschel also achieved a Top 16 time in the 400 free relay. El

The Barracudas and Tiger Sharks of the Carmel Swim Club (CSC) dropped a combined total of 6,490 seconds from their best times during the winter season. Leading the team were Chris Harding (345 seconds) and Max Enoch (221 seconds).

CSC won its 22nd age group title. Kiley Gooch and Grant Wieczorek won highpoint trophies in the 11-12 age group, and team high-point awards went to the 11-12 girls, 11-12 boys and 13-14 boys.

MICHIGAN

Perennial champ Birmingham Blue Dolphins (BBD) captured its 20th consecutive title at the Michigan YMCA Eight and Under State Championships. This was part of a stellar season for BBD, which won Eastern Cluster and YMCA state championships and finished second at the Great Lakes Zone meet. The team also placed 15th at the YMCA national meet, paced by William Sargent, who won three events and Sara Johnson, who placed third in the 200 yard back, fourth in the 100 back and ninth in the 200 IM.

MINNESOTA

Four of Minnesota's top high school swimmers were honored April 18 at the 1997-98 Minnesota All-Star Swimming and Diving Banquet. Receiving honors in class "A" were Hutchinson's Erin Endres and Morris Area's Ryan Lussenden; class "AA" recipients were Minneapolis South's Amy Bouta and Minnetonka's Jordan Watland. In addition, coaches of the year were recognized: Hutchinson's Mike Carls and Red Wing's Charley Nelson ("A") and Eden Prairie's Kate Lundsten and Hutchinson's Jerry Carlson ("AA").

NEW JERSEY

The Bergen Barracudas' 10-andunder boys squad of Ben Heddy, Dan Fimbianti, Chris Fitzpatrick and Thomas Maughan captured the 200 yard free relay (2:03.94) at the New Jersey JOs held at Rutgers University in March. Since all four boys are 9 years old, they plan to defend their title at next year's meet.

Vineland YMCA's 13-and-under junior boys team captured first place in all four relays at the YWCA Junior and Senior Swimming Championship in Charlotte, N.C. David Deckard, Alex Montero, Bobby Daplyn and Jason Bowe recorded times of 1:54.94 in the 200 yard medley, 4:15.63 in the 400 medley, 1:43.43 in the 200 free and 3:47.20 in the 400 free.

NEW YORK

Katie Harris, Susan Allen, Kate Wilson and Sophia Goluses, representing the Pack Swim Team of Pittsford, took first in the 11-12 girls 200 yard medley relay at the McDonald's League Championship in Brockport. Their time of 2:02.40 set a new McDonald's League record which had not been broken since 1979.

TEXAS

The Westfield High School swimming and diving team held its annual awards banquet April 7. Selected as "Most Valuable" athletes were Melissa Wilson, Casey Cochran (girls) and Andy Haidinyak (boys). All three won district championship titles and went on to compete at the regional and state levels. "Most Improved" awards were presented to Kim Enger and Allyn Sutton (girls) and Denis Bandera-Duplantier, Johnathan Siefert, Grant Gist and Rick Dickerman (boys). The team's graduating seniors were presented with "Distinguished Service" awards: Ryan Campbell, Cochran, Christine Elliott, Brooke Spoede, Lori Stotts, Joe Trevino and Melissa Wilson. Recognized as top point scorers were Wilson and Haidinyak (varsity) and Megan Beck and Shaun Pratt junior varsity).
