CALIFORNIA

Several records were broken at the CIF-San Diego High School Championships May 19-23 in San Diego. Division I records were bettered by San Marcos senior Tim Siciliano in the boys 500 yard free (4:21.10) and 200 IM (1:49.47), Rancho Bernardo senior Monica Shannahan in the girls 200 IM (2:04.09) and Carlsbad junior Staci Stitts in the girls 100 breast (1:01.77).

Jacob Fraire of Hilltop was the only Division II swimmer to break a record with his 50.53 in the 100 fly.

Nine of California Capital Aquatics' swimmers will be starting their college careers this fall. The swimmers and the schools they will be attending are: Tina Adkinson, BYU; Alexis Oakland, Stanford; Sarah Brainard and Jay Cherrstrom, UCSD; Kelley Sullivan, Colorado State; Janet Worthington and Katie Younglove, UCLA; Hannah Sasser, Northwestern; and Sarah Whitol, Cal Poly.

GEORGIA

The Warner Robins Aquanauts claimed the Macon Heritage Invitational championship for the third straight year. Despite efforts by 11 other teams and over 700 swimmers, the Aquanauts won the team title by collecting 1,178 points. The Aquanauts were followed by the Macon Waves (790) and Peachtree City (565). High-point winners for the Aquanauts were Katie Randall, Abigail Cunningham, Katie Carpenter, Ben Culpepper and Florrie Cunningham.

LAKE ERIE LSC

On May 9, Lake Erie Swimming held its annual awards program recognizing top performers from the 1997 long course and 1997-98 short course seasons. Age Group Swimmers of the Year were Alyssa Kiel of the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins (LESD) and Steve McDonald of the Firestone Akron Swim Team (FAST). Senior Swimmers of the Year were Diana Munz and Nat Lewis (LESD), and Mark Gangloff (FAST). LESD's Erica Rose was named the Lake Erie Swimmer of the Year.

MISSOURI

High school girls from around the state converged on Springfield May 22-23 for the Missouri High School State Swimming and Diving Championships. New state records were set by seniors Marisa Schenke of Lee's Summit North (200 yard IM, 2:06.24) and Megan Krueger of Oak Park (50 free, 23.96 in prelims). Each of them captured two events: Schenke won the 100 back (57.74), and Krueger took the 100 free (52.97).

The Lafayette Rockwood squad of Megan Sutliff, Sam Gac, Becca Dawson and Melissa Debellis set a state relay record of 1:51.57 in the 200 medley. Other events were won by Stephanie Cranston of Mary Institute/Country Day (200-500 free, 1:54.94-5:07.69), Dawson (100 fly, 57.97) and Tiffany Bohon of Hickman (100 breast, 1:05.64). Hickman's relay finished on top in the 200 free relay (1:41.10), and Marquette grabbed the top spot in the 400 free relay (3:38.41).

NEVADA

Carson High School's girls team and the Reno High School boys' team took top honors at this year's State High School Swimming and Diving Championship meet May 23.

Carson's women's team scored 102 points to Reno's 73 and Bishop Manogue's 56, just three points ahead of Silverado. Carson had two double event winners in Dana Baum (100-200 yard free, 52.521:52.11) and Julie Hardt (500 free, 5:01.98; 200 IM, 2:06.35); in addition, team members swept all three relays. Other event winners were Silverado's Jacque Hoover (50 free, 24.66), Durango's Lindsey Whipple (100 back, 58.09), Douglas' Brittany Reichardt (100 breast, 1:05.35) and Bishop Manogue's Rachelle Carano (lOO fly, 58.34).

Reno's boys came out on top with 103 points to Green Valley's 84 and Carson's 77. Reno was led by double event champs Branden Sparks (50 free, 21.96; 100 back, 53.03) and Michael Lemons (100 free, 47.45; 200 IM, 1:54.19). Reed's Mark Daily also took home two event wins (200 free, 1:42.30; 100 fly, 51.36). Also capturing individual titles were Scott Weaver of Durango (500 free, 4:38.89) and Elliott Kolbe of Douglas (100 breast, 58.84). The relay wins were split among Green Valley (200 medley), Reed (200 free) and Reno (400 free).

NEW YORK

Eight members of the YWCA NYC Marlins graduated from high school this year, and all eight will be attending college this fall. The class of '98 includes team captain Shawn Ambrose (LeMoyne), John Gough (St. Francis or SUNY Stonybrook), Carlos de la Cruz (SUNY Binghamton), Matyas Kelemen (Rutgers), Terry Morin (Rhode Island), Ryan Rose (Massachusetts), Brien Van Wagner (SUNY Binghamton) and Igor Voloshin (Univ. of Connecticut-Storrs).

HIO

Eight graduating seniors from the Cincinnati Marlins squad will-be heading off to their respective colleges this fall: Mike Becher (Denison), Jason Finck (Miami), Mike Keefe (Naval Academy), Greg Lange (Purdue), Kyle O'Hara (Bowling Green State), Jennifer Peters (Illinois), Theresa Schrimpf (Xavier) and Megan Strasser (Eastern Michigan).

The Cincinnati Marlins hosted their Summer Invitational June 26-28 and were tops in the team standings race with 6,646 points. Sarasota (Fla.) YMCA was second with 2,310 points with Kenton County Clippers third (1,160). Nineteen teams with 486 swimmers took part in the meet.
