Red Silvia Dies. On June 16, Hall of Fame swim coach Charles E. "Red" Silvia died in Springfield, Mass. at the age of 87. Silvia, who coached at Springfield from 1937 to 1978, guided Bill Yorzyk to an Olympic gold medal in the 200 fly in 1956.

Coraggio Steps Up. Chris Coraggio has been named the new women's swim coach at Northern Michigan University. Coraggio was an assistant coach the last six years at Drury College in Springfield, Mo.

Riordan Steps Down. Ray Riordan, head coach of men's and women's swimming at Towson University and the only head coach in 30 years of men's swimming at Towson, has resigned. He will remain at Towson as a full-time assistant professor in the department of kinesiology. During Riordan's tenure, his team posted a 246-176 record. The Tigers won seven conference titles and went undefeated in 1981 and '82. A search for a successor has begun.
