Fast Times at St. Francis High

Five state records were set at the Ohio State Boys High School Championships in Canton, four by Coach Chris Wolford's powerful St. Francis de Sales (Toledo) team. St. Francis senior Tony Kurth had a hand in all of them. Kurth, who will swim for the University of Michigan next year, set individual state marks in the 100 fly (48.79p) and 200 IM (1:47.70). He also anchored St. Francis' recordsetting 200 and 400 yard free relays.

In the 200, the team of Bryan Bansbach (21.72), Scott Kopenig (21.22), David Fraas (20.48) and Kurth (19.81) clocked 1:23.21. The 400 free team of Brink Ciferri (46.94), James Leahy (45.12), Fraas (45.79) and Kurth (43.95) stroked a very swift 3:01.80. The fifth record was set by Sycamore (Cincinnati) junior Dan Ketchum, whose 4:22.73 chopped more than three seconds off the mark he set last year. Despite St. Francis' heroics, the team title was won by St. Xavier (Cincinnati).
