Swimming World and Junior Swimmer, May 2001

Colorado

The Arapahoe women's swimming team won its first-- ever state high school 5A title, Feb. 17. Arapahoe scored 310 points, defeating second-place Cherry Creek (271) and third-place Smoky Hill (161). State champions from Arapahoe included the 200 free relay of Katlyn Hamilton, Jasmine Oeinck, Kristen Peterson and Eryn Bowman, whose time of 1:39.10 ranks them as the seventh fastest in Colorado high school history; and the 400 free relay of Oeinck, Kelly Griffin, Peterson and Bowman (3:34.67), which was the ninth fastest in state history.

South Carlolina

Although Carley Beaudreau and Andrea Lehner swim on different teams, they are the best of friends. The duo dominated the 11-12 girls age group at the Colorado Short Course Championships, winning 10 of the 12 events and setting five state records between them. Carley, who swims for the Castle Rock 'Cudas, set records in the 50 yard back (28.42), 100 back (1:01.10) and 200 IM (2:11.50), while Andrea, a member of the Aurora Aquatics Academy, bettered state marks in the 50 fly (26.89) and 100 fly (59.59). Carley won the high-point award for their age group by a mere six points.

Florida

Saint

Petersburg Aquatics' 10-andunder girls relay of Katie Brown, Tracy Rorer, Kelsey Krauss and Megan Romano swam the 200 yard medley relay in Clearwater, Feb. 24, in 2:08.28, breaking the state record by two seconds. They went on to the Florida Junior Olympics in Gainesville, where they set a JO record in the 200 yard free relay (1:54.97).

Illinois

Ashley Jones, 12, and Josh Catellier, 16, were the first Joliet Jets to qualify for the Illinois Senior Championships in two years. At the meet, held March 24 in Chicago, Ashley was eighth in the 200 yard back and set an 11-12 girls state record (2:12.88). She also finaled in the 200 IM (2:14.90) and 400 IM (4:46.34). Josh competed in the 100 breast (1:05.92), 100 fly (59.00) and 200 breast (2:25.63).

Missouri

The Clayton Shaw Park Swim Team (CSP) won the 2001 Ozark LSC Division I Championship meet, the LSC's age group short course championships for swimmers aged 14 and under who have achieved at least a "gold" time. CSP swimmers also won four out of six age group high-point trophies (10and-under boys, 10-and-under girls, 11-12 boys and 13-14 boys). Henry Felker, a 14-year-old CSP swimmer, won the Kurasik Award for outstanding swimmer of the meet. The team also received the sportsmanship trophy for the second year in a row for outstanding sportsmanship during the preceding year.

New Jersey

The Red Bank YMCA finished third out of 28 teams at the seventh annual New Jersey YMCA State Championship Swim Meet. The meet was held Feb. 17-18 at the Gloucester Institute of Technology in Sewell. Individual event winners included Ashley Bissett (15-18 girls 500 yard free, 5:09.33), Mary McCue (15-18 girls 100 breast, 1:07.47), Vincent Tupper (13-14 boys 200 IM, 2:08.70), Nicole Castronuova (11-12 girls 50 back, 30.12), Katie Tice (11-12 girls 50 fly, 28.82) and Lauren Mari (10-and-under girls 50 fly, 32.12). The 13-14 boys 200 medley relay of Dan O'Connor, Kelly McCarthy, Tupper and Chris Cefalo set a meet record of 1:42.29. The 11-12 girls and 15-18 girls came in first place in their respective age groups.

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma state high school swimming finals at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center, Feb. 24, saw the demise of three state records: the boys 200 yard free relay by Jenks High (1:26.08), the girls 200 medley relay by Edmond Memorial (1:51.20) and the girls 500 free by Whitney Lynn of Tulsa Union (4:53.84). The Jenks boys team chalked up its sixth straight win, and the Edmond Memorial girls won for the third consecutive time.

Pennsylvania

Burkwood Aquatic Club's 9-10 boys 400 yard free relay set meet and state records at the Pennsylvania Age Group Championships with a time of 4:13.50. The team consisted of Christoph Berger, Scott Taylor, Brandon Carr and Tucker Smith.

Tennessee

Excel Aquatics from Nashville placed two relays in the top 16 National Age Group long course rankings for 2000. The 13-14 girls 400 meter medley relay of Toni Kroll, Pam Galvin, Macey Webb and Caroline Poling ranked 14th, while the 10-and-under boys team of Tyler Shedron, Curtis Lovelace, Joe Ziegler and Chris Housden was second in the 200 free and fourth in the 200 medley relay.
