California

The Monrovia Watercats took third place in their division at the Southern California Aquatic Association Winter Championships. The meet took place Feb. 24 at the Belmont Plaza

Pool in Long Beach. Team members who took home first- through sixthplace medals included Rubin Acosta, Kim Coates, Brad Felty, Mariah Felty, Katie Fisher, Emily Frederick, Helen Frederick, James Frederick, Rebecca Frederick, Andy Gerletti, Kathryn Gerletti, Brendon Gray, Kim Hayford, Kristen Hayford, Mark Hayford, A.J. Hernandez, Rose Hernandez, Sandy Hernandez, Travis Horn, Jenna Johnson, Robbie Johnson, Samantha Maggio, Melissa McGrail, Barbara Parker and Jourdan Perkins.

Indiana

Carmel High School swam away with the team title at the Indiana Boys High School State Championships, Feb. 22-23, in

Indianapolis. Carmel swimmers combined for 299.5 points; South Bend Riley came in second with 154 points, just one-half point ahead of Indianapolis North Central. Brian Hartley, a senior at North Central, set the only individual state record of the meet (500 yard free, 4:25.73) and also won the 200 free (1:37.96). Carmel's 200 yard medley relay team tied the state record in prelims (1:33.05) and also set a record in the 400 free relay (3:04.24).

Great Lakes YMCA Zone

Championships in Carmel, Ind., by grabbing high-point honors in five of the eight age groups contested: 9-10 girls, 11-12 boys, 13-14 girls, 13-14 boys and 15-and-over girls. Dan Priestly set zone meet records in the 13-14 boys 50 yard free (21.32) and 100 free (47.21), while Elizabeth McClure qualified for YMCA Nationals. Shannon Bauer received the Paul Atkinson Great Lakes Zone Outstanding Swimmer award for exemplifying outstanding athletic and scholastic achievement, good sportsmanship, positive attitudes and Christian values.

New York

At the Metro Zone

Qualifier, March 2224, at Lehman College in the Bronx, North Shore Swim Club's brother-sister swimming duo of Brandon (16) and Priscilla (14) Modrov met Eastern Zone standards.

Brandon's times came in the 15-18 boys 200 yard breast (2:15.57) and 200 fly (2:01.36), while Priscilla's swims included the 100-200 fly (59.86-2:12.25), 200-400 IM (2:10.644:39.18) and 200 back (2:09.62). She also swam the 1000 and 1650 free.

North Dakota

Four state records were set at the North Dakota boys state high school championships, March 1-2-all by Minot High School swimmers.

Sophomore Matthew Lowe set marks in the 100 yard breast (58.24) and 100 fly (52.19). Lowe also helped set two relay records: with Steve Olson, Rob Hansen and Brock Skarsgard in the 200 free relay (1:28.91); and with Skarsgard, Brian Miller and Aaron Weeks in the 400 free relay (3:15.30). Skarsgard won the 100 (47.62) and 200 free (1:45.26). Grand Forks' Matt Bonzer was tops in the 200 IM (1:57.16) and 100 back (53.80). West Fargo's Sam Christianson won the 50 free (22.02) and teammate Josh Koehnen was first in the 500 free (4:55.06). Christianson and Koehnen also teamed with Andy Schoonhoven and Ryan Sandbek to win the 200 medley relay (1:40.99).

Texas

Christian Carlson, Donnie Walker, Thomas Helms and Gage Morris of the Alamo Area Aquatic Association capfared first-place finishes in both boys 10 and under 200 yard free (2:04.14) and 200 medley (2:22.72) relays at the South Texas Swimming Championships, Feb. 15-17. The meet was held at the josh Davis Natatorium in San Antonio. The boys are coached by Jack Alexander.

Virgina

The boys and girls swim teams of Collegiate School in Richmond completed a banner year when both finished second (out of 28 and 25 teams, respectively) in the Virginia State Independent Schools Championships. Collegiate School doesn't even have an on-campus pool. In the course of the school year, the boys had their highest finish ever, setting school records in nine of 10 events, including a 1:59.89 200 yard IM clocking by junior Mark Wayne Sisk (see photo below). The season highlight for the girls was a 12-point dual meet win over defending state champion Madeira. Eighth-grader Katie Lundvall finished second in the state in the 100 yard back with a school mark of 1:02.55.
