Path Forward: 2005-2010, The

Lohmann, Jack R

The January 2005 special issue celebrated a major transformation of the Journal of Engineering Education to focus on the publication of scholarly research in engineering education. It was unlike the many evolutionary changes which occurred over the years as the journal continually improved its operations and the quality of its material. We hope this new focus will have a catalytic effect in the creation of a community of scholars and practitioners dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in engineering education. The power of change, however, can be limited unless the subsequent opportunities and challenges are anticipated, embraced, and well managed.

This spring the associate editors and I developed the journal's first strategic plan. We are particularly grateful for the help and guidance provided by the journal's advisory board. Their thoughtprovoking comments and suggestions for improvement helped broaden our perspectives, strengthen our arguments, and sharpen our focus. The exercise proved to be challenging yet rewarding. Our strategic plan, which follows this editorial, provides a roadmap for the journal as we seek to attain higher levels of achievement. This summer the associate editors and I will complete the development of a set of specific activities to address the strategic plan goals and strategies. As you read the strategic plan, I hope you will notice that it proposes to both advance the journal as well as to build a vibrant community dedicated to scholarship in engineering education. We would welcome the involvement from anyone interested in joining us in our efforts.

I would also like to call to your attention another journal first: the Journal of Engineering Education 2004 Annual Report. The report, which may be found on our Web site (www.asee.org/jee), summarizes some of our major activities this past year and statistics about our operational performance. We decided to provide annual reports to keep you informed about the journal generally and to report on our progress with the strategic plan. We will be posting an annual report to our Web site in May each year.
